01 — The first hour

What should I do in the first hour after my roof starts leaking?

Make the house safe, slow the water down inside, and take pictures. Then call for a tarp and let your insurance company know.

  1. Keep people and pets out from under wet, stained, or sagging ceilings.
  2. Shut off power at the breaker to any light fixture or ceiling fan in a wet ceiling.
  3. Catch drips with buckets, pots, and towels, and lay plastic over floors or furniture you can't move.
  4. Move electronics, rugs, family papers, and anything valuable out of the wet room.
  5. Take photos and video of the leak, the ceiling, and any damaged belongings, and of the roof from the ground.
  6. Call the Pro4mance 24/7 storm line at (606) 401-9922 for an emergency tarp.
  7. Report the damage to your insurance company. Policies generally require prompt notice of a loss.

Also jot down when the storm hit and when the leak started. Your adjuster will ask.

02 — Safety

Should I climb up and tarp it myself?

No. A wet roof is slick, storm damage can hide soft decking, and wind can turn a loose tarp into a sail while you're on a ladder.

Stay on the ground. If a limb is tangled in wires, keep back and call the utility company. From the yard you can safely photograph missing shingles, holes, or debris.

Our crews don't go up during lightning or strong wind either. We tarp at the first safe window.

03 — Before the adjuster

Why tarp the roof before the adjuster comes out?

Because every rain that gets through an open roof adds damage, and after a widespread storm an adjuster may not reach you right away. A documented tarp protects the house without hiding anything from the claim.

Water that sits in insulation and drywall can spread well past the original leak. Most homeowners policies also ask you to take reasonable steps to protect your home from further damage after a loss, so look at the duties-after-loss section of your own policy.

Tarping doesn't replace the claim process. You file the claim yourself, and under Kentucky law a roofing contractor cannot negotiate it for you or pay, waive, or rebate your deductible. See how to file a roof insurance claim in Kentucky and our insurance claim roofing page.

04 — Documentation

How is an emergency tarp documented for my claim?

We photograph and measure the damage before we cover it, then photograph the finished tarp. You get those records along with the invoice for the emergency work.

What we record When Why it matters for your claim
Dated photos of the damageBefore the tarpShows the storm damage as we found it
Measurements of the damaged areaBefore the tarpGives the size of the problem, not just a picture
Photos of the installed tarpAfter the tarpShows the home was protected from more water
Invoice for the emergency workAfter the tarpLets you ask your insurer about the cost

05 — Next steps

What happens after the tarp is on?

A tarp is a temporary fix meant to hold until the roof is permanently repaired. Next comes a full inspection and a written estimate.

Our free roof inspection looks at the whole roof, not just the leak, so you know whether a roof repair will do or a roof replacement makes more sense. If replacement is the answer, most residential roofs are finished in one day. We can also attend your adjuster's inspection if you'd like us there.

London, KY — Emergency Tarping FAQ

Roof leak questions, answered.

Who do I call for an emergency roof tarp in London, KY?

Call Pro4mance Roofing and Home Improvements on the 24/7 storm line at (606) 401-9922. We are a locally owned roofing contractor with an office at 333 N Main St, Suite D, in downtown London, and we tarp storm-damaged roofs across London, Laurel County, Corbin, and Whitley, Knox, and Clay counties. Tell us where the water is coming in and whether a limb is on the roof. We respond as quickly as weather and safety allow, photograph the damage before we cover it, and follow up with a free inspection and written estimate for the permanent repair.

Does homeowners insurance pay for emergency roof tarping in Kentucky?

Often it does when the tarp protects a home from covered storm damage, but it depends on your policy, so ask your insurance company. Homeowners policies generally cover sudden damage from wind, hail, or a falling tree, not leaks caused by an old, worn roof, and they generally expect you to report the loss promptly. Keep the invoice for emergency tarping in London and the photos Pro4mance takes before and after the tarp goes on, and give copies to your adjuster. You file the claim yourself, and a roofing contractor cannot pay, waive, or rebate your deductible under Kentucky law.

Can a roof be tarped while it is still raining in London, KY?

Light rain does not always stop a tarp, but lightning, strong wind, and darkness can make climbing a roof unsafe for anyone, including a roofing crew. When you call the Pro4mance storm line during a storm in London, we plan the tarp for the first safe window. In the meantime, protect the inside of the house: set buckets and towels under drips, move valuables out of the wet area, and shut off power at the breaker to any light fixture or ceiling fan in a wet ceiling. Never go up on a wet roof yourself.

Will a tarp affect my insurance adjuster's inspection in London?

It should not hurt the inspection when the damage is documented first. Before Pro4mance puts a tarp on a roof in London, we take dated photos and measurements of the damaged area, and we photograph the tarp once it is installed. That gives your adjuster a record of what the roof looked like before it was covered. Leaving a hole open while you wait for the adjuster usually does more harm than good, because water that reaches insulation, drywall, and flooring adds damage that did not need to happen.
